My trip to The Gambia and Cape Verde
December 2004

Cape Verde-Santiago Island

We spent a week visiting Cape Verde. This is a beautiful country. The lifestyle is far more western than The Gambia and reflects its Portuguese heritage. Electricity, running water (although good hot showers were still scarce!), and western dress were the norm. The people are absolutely wonderful.

We stayed up on the old plateau in Praia. Very mediterranean look to the city.

Praia is suffering from "sprawl."

Our Residencial Paraiso in Praia.

The overlook from the Presidential Palace with more city sprawl in the background.

We visited Cidade Velha and walked up to the fort built by the Portuguese in the 16th century.

Looking down from the fort to a fertile valley.

We took a trip to the other end of the island. The mountains were incredibly beautiful.

Within the island the lifestyle is more West African.

Tarrafal is a beautiful village by the sea.

The fishing boats were so colorful.

Lava flow frozen by the water.
